Default gsm phones

Be it possible to transfer my phone number from a non-GSM service to a GSM phone (ie one that needs a SIM card)? Tried google and wiki with no luck, and the thought of calling T-mobile and waiting on hold for what I'm sure is a dumb question doesn't appeal.

Apparently we need a cell phone forum.

Anyway, I recently did this with Cingular. Your mileage may vary.

You can port any number to any carrier now.

If you port into T-Mobile they will supply you with a SIM and a new phone.
