Am I ready? (A little long of a post)
Hey guys,
First of all, I would like to say that I really enjoy the books that 2+2 publishing puts out, and I also have to say that you guys on the forums are top notch. Your advice is great. Now, I come to you with a question (With a lot of background). I want to enter into a tourney at a local casino. It's a $50 buy in, and I'm not sure how anyone plays. I'm only 19 (Casinos let 18+ in around here) and have been playing poker for about three years (Good poker for about two) around my home area and here at college. I've read a few books by two plus two, and participate in a tourney with an average of 10 other freshmen every weekend (Sometimes we do two), and consistently place well (At least in money, most of the time, first). A few of them are as good as me as well. A large tourney (About 40-50 played) I played at my college, I placed second. I consider myself a good player. I always know the pot odds and usually know what my opponents have using reads and analyzing their bets. A pro from back home coached me for a short time. Finally to the question, after scouting out the tourney this week, do you think I should participate in the tourney the following week if I feel confident in my skills after seeing these guys play? |

If you feel comfortable losing $50 to a bad beat, and confident that you're ahead of the field then get your money in.

Re: Am I ready? (A little long of a post)
Haha, I realize that my question seems sort of stupid. I mean I'm sure no one here has played with me. I guess what I'm trying to ask is whether or not I should do a tourney or a cash game. I have a decent bank roll, so loosing $50 wouldn't be an issue. I think to survive around here it would be wise to enter into a cash game with $150. My biggest problem, is I know I will be nervous on either road I take no matter how good I am with the competition. I'm just not use to this level of money.

AC. The only way to move up is to take a shot that's outside of your current comfort zone (As you could gather from my post that you replied in I'm in the process of doing the same myself ). If your bank roll can handle it then scout the game as you've planned and then do it. The first time approach it as a $50 investment in your poker education. Obviously you'll try to win, but don't expect to. Nobody does every time and you'll find a lot of differences from what you're used to and will have to figure out how to adapt. After the tourny evaluate what you did right and what you did wrong. Post hands if you're not sure.
