I think it is basically 2 different ways, either learn how to play (raise AKo UTG, fold JTo UTG etc.) or try to understand the game. The first way is the quickest and can be achieved by reading books etc., but you will also be a losing player if you are at a table with good players who have learned it the second way instead.

I've gotten some really good advice on this forum and also in some of the books like Sklansky's TOP and others. Practice, thinking about strategy, etc. I'm purely recreational and have just really broke even, but even that is better than others have done, so I guess I'm doing okay. Read sound books
Practice Read and respond to hand posts in the forum appropriate to your game. IMO, RESPONDING to others hands is the single most effective learning tool available as it forces you to really think through hands. Start at very, very low stakes and work your way up. Enjoy. |
