Even if they allow you to use your cell phone near a table its going to be pretty obvious if you're taking pictures and signaling someone.

Maybe they would disallow it for the same reason I think they would still disallow the kid from wearing his iPod.

People tend to get annoying when they are on their cell phone and sometimes they slow the game down.

It's not a big deal to take a few steps away from the table and miss a few hands (especially blackjack) while you talk.

How can a cameraphone see a dealer's down card in BJ? It isn't lifted.

Disclaimer - this is not from personal experience, and I do not condone violation of gaming laws in any way.

Short answer - It requires training and a sloppy dealer.

Longer answer - The down card is always lifted off the felt to some degree. A good dealer will minimize the height, but it is not that unusual to find a dealer who will raise the down card as much as 1/4 of an inch off the felt. An observant player can spot the hole card if they can get their eyes as close as possible to the felt. Of course, if you have a camera or something reflective that is actually laying on the table, that is alot easier. The difference is that scrunching down in your seat and/or pretending to be passed out is legal, while using a reflective device / camera results in prison time in most states.

Obviously, it is easier to get a table level line of sight inconspicuously if you are away from the table. This also requires some type of "yes/no" signal to the question of "does he have a face card".

I am specifically thinking about the person who uses their phone with an ear piece while they stand behind the BJ table (and across the pit from a different table). The phone itself is held at approx their waist and they glance down at the phone every minute or so (about 60 hands/hour in BJ). Every so often, they glance to their right, check their watch, and/or touch their belt with their right hand (each of these means "face card"). After 10 minutes, their call is over and they leave the casino.
