Default Excel and Word Files take Forever to Load on New Computer

My fiancee has a new Dell computer. All excel and Word files take about 1.5 minutes to load if I open a file via a file icon. However, if I open the Excel or Word program then open a file from the menu options: File--->Open, then it only takes a quarter of a second.

I can open and run many other files and programs during the 1.5 minutes it takes to load a file. It appears as if the computer isn't even doing anything during the 1.5 minutes.

In "Task Manager" the performance rating is at about 1-2% during the 1.5 minutes.

Any suggestions?

Check to make sure your antivirus isn't setup to scan on every file read.

I just figured out what it was. It's the damn HP software that was installed when we bought a new printer/scanner. I just forced it to not start on startup, restarted the computer, and now everything works great.

This is ridiculous. The printer software is so bloated. There is no way to close the program besides using task manager or to set preferences from within the program.

Thanks for the help guys.

BTW- turning off the option to scan every file for viruses only reduced the load time slightly.
