Default raise or go for overcalls on the turn?

This is a hand i saw stoxtrader play in one of his vids at 0.50/1$:
(i guess he probably made the right play, but i don't really understand it)

He is 2 off the button with K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

UTG limps, he limps, CO folds and the button raises.
BigBlind folds, everyone else calls(9Bets)

Flop is K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

UTG bets, Stox raises to thin the field.
Button and SB call cold; UTG calls(8bb)

Turn is 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

UTG bets

Now:
He says, that he doesn't raise to save his implied odds if he hits on the river and to avoid a 3bet

But what about raising to knock out the other 2 players?
My thought is, that if the other 2 are allowed to call with good odds(1 to 10) to draw maybe to a second pair, with a jack for example(i guess a king with a higher kicker doesn't worry him, i can understand that) then isn't the pot already big enough to protect it against something like that?

Pls give me your opinions on this, so i can understand his decision. Thx

Ps: Eventually the two behind him folded anyway and he got his flush on the river but i don't think that really matters for my question?

Not sure why he limped preflop..
On the turn it mostly depends on your read on the bettor; but against an unknown utg limper (even at .5/1) you can't like your hand very much.
