Part of the reason that beating the elderly widow seems so bad is that she's defenseless and vulnerable. One solid blow to the face could be enough to kill an old woman. Change that to a strong person that you'd hold up as a role model and I don't think it would generally be considered much worse than just beating an average guy coming down the street who does some things wrong in his personal life.

Besides, as said before, a lot of these things that are supposedly being done "to God" are in fact nothing of the sort. Fornication, for example, which has long been considered a serious sin by many Christian religions is only offensive to God if God is trying to manipulate us, making our whole lives into some sort of juvenile test. Otherwise, it's just a joyful act between two people that doesn't affect God whatsoever.
