Rereading Kreidler's screed, I've decided his "point" probably has little to do w/D'Amato, the PPA, the UIGEA, what have you . . . .

Seems rather he's wanting simply to argue poker is not a sport (and perhaps doesn't belong in the sports section). Thus the sarcastic response to D'Amato's use of the word "sport" with reference to poker, the "blah blah blah" response (literally) to PPA's poker-is-skill stance, the characterization of poker players as "hold 'em junkies," etc. (Looking back at the NY Times article, this "poker is not a sport" argument seems to be the only idea Kreidler contributes that wasn't already covered there, really.)

Perhaps Kreidler didn't think he make such a point directly on the ESPN site (where poker is, in fact, listed as a "sport"), and so did it in this unfocused, rambling way . . . ?

Mean Gene nicely dissects Kreidler’s article in his blog entry, F**k Mark Kreidler. It’s more intelligent than the title might lead you to believe. (You’ll have to scroll a little because the link was censored.)

This blogger suspects Kreidler wrote is because he finds the notion of poker as sport laughable.

Another blogger thinks Kreidler wrote it because of some corporate conspiracy. ESPN’s poker shows are suffering from competing shows sponsored by online poker sites, so Kreidler wrote the piece as a corporate lackey to undermine the e-poker industry. Hmmmm... Where’s my tinfoil hat?

Kreidler has two sons, both old enough to wrestle (one of the reasons he just wrote his new book, “Four Days to Glory: Wrestling with the Soul of the American Heartland”). Maybe he just busted one of his two kids playing online poker, and this is just his way of lashing out? The guy clearly has a personal beef with poker, so maybe his motivation is a little closer to home than it appears.

I'm late to the thread, but I immediately wrote the Ombudsman when I saw the article. It really is a poor reflection on the standards of ESPN, so he should be alerted, and he is the one keeping the writers in check. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?id=2097428

9. Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience.
