Default Differences shorthand to longhand

I'm just starting to learn. and after reading theory of poker, i am now reading small stakes hold em.

All advice in the book though, is for longhand small stakes limit games and the only thing so far(i'm about halfway through) said about adjusting to shorthanded games, is to imagine that the first few players have folded.

I have the feeling though, that there is more to it than that. and i would really like to be able to continue shorthanded games(i play 0.50/1 to start with) but knowing that i'm not applying the concepts in a wrong way.(especially in using the startinghandssection as a guideline)

Thx for any advice, especially by people who read the book.
