Would I be correct in assuming that there are people who say it, with no intention of doing it? More as something comforting to say?

[/ QUOTE ]

Probably, but you need to be sure. If someone ever tells you they will pray for you, then quickly ask, in a very loud voice, "DO YOU REALLY INTEND TO PRAY, OR ARE YOU JUST TRYING TO SAY SOMETHING COMFORTING?!?"

Get to the bottom of this ruse.

i do not consider myself a christian, because some of the biggest hypocrites i know do consider themselves christians. however, i do consider myself quite spiritual and over years have developed a method of prayer that is never "canned," but does follow a pattern of sorts to get me in synch with a higher place and understanding that the right thing is out there for everyone to choose.

so when i say i will say a prayer for someone, i mean it.

So your strategy is to avoid sharing any personal traits with any hypocrites? That sounds exhausting, not sure I'm following you.

just an aside to people around here who question "christians" as people who are frequently more into worrying about other people than themselves.

while some of the finest people i have ever met were christians, so were some of the people i regret meeting.

i think i was really trying to make a distinction between people who Call themselves christians and who qualify for the position.

There are people I know who have prayer lists and they include whomever needs a prayer. I don't believe in God but I used to. I often included "prayer requests" in my praying. Although I would always pray the same thing for them. That God's will be done in their lives.

Can be said for muslim, atheist, mormans, cults, poker player...etc

does it really matter what they call themselves?

when i preached, my most used sermon:

cliffnotes
Jesus told the disciples they would know you by your love for one another, not if your an alcholic, sexually aactive, black, white, none of that will cause you to be recognized as a christian...Love one another, christian or not, it doesnt matter
