Re: Cheapest nice rural place to live in the US ?
[ QUOTE ]
Consider Southern Oregon -- it sounds like you might like the Ashland area. [/ QUOTE ] Is that cheap enough? I thought it would be getting pricey with the CA exodus. The outdoors there is amazing. |

[ QUOTE ] I really think areas of colorado are developing nicely, and you can still get some super cheap places. Just pick any small area north of denver on I-25. [/ QUOTE ] Hmm.. I find Denver to be a total [censored]-hole, but I like the rest of Colorado. Seems to me there's too much winter there. I like the skiing and I love the mountains in the summer time. [/ QUOTE ] By your post, I'm guessing you have spent a total of 10 days in Colorado. Our winters are about as mild as they come, with over 300 days of sunshine/year and many days over 50 degrees. The winter is nicer than the midwest and the eastern seaboard by far. And Denver is far from a [censored]-hole, it's the cleanest "big" city I've ever been to, by quite a bit. |

[/ QUOTE ] More like 20, but yeah. Anyway : Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Average Daily Maximum °F 43 47 54 61 71 82 88 86 77 66 52 44 Average Daily Minimum °F 15 19 25 34 44 53 59 57 47 36 24 16 It looks like Denver has freezing lows about 50% of the year. I'm sure that's mild compared to much of the US but I'm looking for something closer to CA weather (3 freezing months or less). |

The outdoors there is amazing. [/ QUOTE ] In some places, it's skyrocketing for precisely that reason. Employment is remaining pretty close to the same, though, as a lot of these places basically have no industries or large employers. But there are plenty of new car lots. It's definitely becoming a favorite retirement place, but old people don't go out and splurge on a lot of stuff. |

Re: Cheapest nice rural place to live in the US ?
I guess it depends on a bunch of factors that we need to know about you. What is your race and what kind of weather is ideal for you? If you're white, you can live anyplace and not get hassled. If you're black/asian you might want to stick to the suburbs of a larger city. And if you're black/asian, avoid the South at all costs. If you want all round good weather, California is your best bet. If you want fairly even seasons, Arkansas. If you don't mind cold winters/snow, Colorado/Wyoming.
Growing up in the Midwest and moving to the SF Bay Area, the one thing I most notice is the lack of bugs/mosquitoes in CA versus the rest of the country. If you hate bugs, avoid the midwest and the South. Oh, and I hate Texas. |

I want a little place in the country where no one will bug me, I can buy it outright and just check out of society and enjoy nature. [ QUOTE ] Oh, and I hate Texas. [/ QUOTE ] I've spent many years in Texas. I think Austin is great but it's no longer cheap. The outdoors in Texas is mostly pretty poor (humid summer, cold winter, no mountains, mosquitos, not much nice nature in general, etc.) Something in Plant Hardiness Zone 7-10 : http://www.avant-gardening.com/zone.htm |

New Flash: Most black people live in the South.
Oh, and big fish is giving idiotic advice about the South. |
