Re: pros and cons of riding a motorcycle

Bikers, Do guys who have Harleys and other cruisers usually lay them down at some point too? Or are you mainly just talking about sport bikes? [/ QUOTE ] All types drop their bikes. I've seen guys who simply forget to put the kickstand down when they get off their bike and just tip over. I suspect most of the bike wrecks you see on youtube and such are sport bikes because they were already filming themselves doing tricks or whatnot. |

[/ QUOTE ] I had a sport bike in highschool, and now I have a road bike. I laid the sport bike down once, but it wasn't at a very high speed. It didn't really do much damage so I drove it for quite a long time after. I havn't gotton close to any accidents on my "new" bike yet. |

Re: pros and cons of riding a motorcycle
hmmmmmm, hugely on the fence about this. I had a motorcycle just as I turned 17 in my senior year of high school. Had a very very bad wreck with a car and had to be taken by helicopter to the ER while unconcious. However, for the last 4 months of high school I was in a wheelchair so I had nothing to do all day so I started playing online poker and became very good at it(for those that know me here). Just because I got a motorcycle and got in a crash, and started playing online poker, it drastically changed my life however. Although, that is a very rare, and isolated case. When/if you do get a motorcycle, like many here has said, get very good safety gear, especially a good helmet like Shoei or Arai(whichever fits your head better, I got an Arai). Obviously you have to shell out some cash($700 for me), but it saved my life for sure, dont get some [censored] $50 helmet or the one they give you sometimes for buying a brand new bike.
Pros: -Lots and lots of fun, you will have the time of your life -Fun to ride with buddies/friends/bike club -Fun to ride with a girl on the back(my girlfriend, now fiancee) Cons: -I almost slid my bike multiple times while taking corners -You will almost most certainly drop your bike, lay it down, or get into an accident if you have one for probably 2 years I'd say -High risk of death -Soccer Moms driving minivans that dont see you(had to tap on someones windshield one time and give them the middle finger) -Elevated increase of early death/paralysis To be totally honest in my isolated case, I dont know if I would take it back or not of getting a bike, very very hard question to answer. It was a lot of good times, and then a lot of bad times while injured(2 blown ACL's, 1 blown miniscus, badly broken ankle which required a plate and 9 metal permanent screws, large scar on my forehead from my sunglasses shattering) Do what you want, just be smart. |

Re: pros and cons of riding a motorcycle
if you are the type to push the envelope then dont get a bike. they are not for those that like to go fast or take corners fast. and not for those that dont pay attention or learn how to handle the bike.
i have a few hundred thousand miles on bikes from dirt bikes to harleys and havent had a major incidence yet. got lucky a few times though without getting hurt much. a good bike costs about the same as a good used car and gets about 50 miles per gallon. |
