Re: SOA Exam P. Anyone taken it?
[ QUOTE ]
I'm taking it on 2/23. I've just been using the sample exams located here. I usually go in 1 hour incriments and do 10 questions in that time. I typically get 5-7 correct. For those of you who have taken it: Is 50-70% any good? And did you have any time issuses on the test? I often struggle to finish the 10 questions in less than an hour. [/ QUOTE ]I doubt that 50%-70% is enough. You have to be pretty fast in order to finish the exam in 3 hours. If you get stuck more than 2 minutes on a problem, skip it. You should have the time to come back to it. |

Re: SOA Exam P. Anyone taken it?
Thanks for all the advice. I am taking this Feb. 22. I wish I had taken this when I was in school last year, as I have forgotten some of this material since then. Best of luck to everyone else also taking it.

Re: SOA Exam P. Anyone taken it?
I'd have to consistently be getting at least above 70% on the practice exams before I felt comfortable that I could pass.

Re: SOA Exam P. Anyone taken it?
The ACTEX has the best coverage of exam P. ACTEX is awful for FM though, as a warning.
70% on practice exams is not enough. |

Re: SOA Exam P. Anyone taken it?
I just took exam P/1 today. I got the print out saying I passed, how accurate is that? It says "Congratulations! A preliminary analysis of your test results shows that you were successful in achieving the passing score established by the SOA/CAS/CIA for exam P/1. Your examination responces will be verified by the SOA/CAS/CIA and your official score report will be mailed to you in approximately six weeks." I didn't know they were going to give out results that day, does any one know if this is 100% accurate? Would it be safe to put that I passed on my resume now before getting the official grade in 6 weeks? Also to OP, actex isnt very good for P/1, but I don't know of anything better. Actex does a good job for FM/2 though.

It's funny you mentioned the Actex manual for Exam 2, I am likely going to take it in three months. Congrats on passing. |

For FM also get "Mathematics of Investment and Credit" by Broverman. I dont know what to put on my resume for the next 6 weeks(I am graduating in May). I was thinking I would put something like this: Passed exam P/1 (According to their new preliminary analysis, official numerical grade released in early April) I called SOA and they said they are very confident that the preliminary scores are correct, but they are not guaranteed. I would like to think they would only congratulate you on passing if you are in the 7+ range, and maybe not give results to those close to the line. |

Re: SOA Exam P. Anyone taken it?
Just noticed this thread again and thought i'd bump it.
I passed this friday unofficially as well. now, i am going to try and find a job. Studying for exam FM as well. consensus is that its an easier exam, however i think its going to be harder for me. almost all the stuff in exam P i studied for years in college. other than the very basic stuff, i really haven't ever been exposed to the material in FM. so i am basically going to need to study the manuals from cover to cover. |
