I find these "equality" arguments ridiculous, especially in sport which should be a virtual meritocracy.

Well, the meritocracy is who sells the tickets and TV time.
I don't care if the men's #349 can easily defeat the women's #1, it's how much people will pay to see #1 vs #2 in each gender. If the women's matches pull in the same amount of money, they should be paid the same.

Exactly.

If they want tickets and TV time, then make the women play in thong bikinis.

women play 3 sets the men play 5. men are on the courts for much longer times, attract more fans, etc. if women played best of 5 matches and attracted a similar amount of fans i would have no problem with equal pay

Please don't encourage them to have the women play 3 out of 5. I can see it now - Natalie Dechy vs Russia Randomova in a 3 of 5 5 hour battle. I'd rather gargle broken glass.

They clearly don't deserve equal pay but as long as they don't actually have the women play 3 of 5 set matches I'm happy.

Don't women in tenis these days bring in more money to the sport? I thought I read somewhere that female tenis is much more popular then male tenis? If this is true shouldnt they get more money then the males?

Back when the Williams Sisters were hot, and before Federer was owning the universe, Women's tennis was probably more popular. But that was only a few years window.
