trouble with sets
40-80 at the Commerce. Two hands really troubled me.
Hand 1: I'm on the button with 66. One limper in MP, cutoff bets, and I three-bet. SB folds, and BB calls. MP and cutoff also call. Flop is QJ6 rainbow. Checked to cutoff who bets, I raise and BB just calls. MP folds and cutoff calls. Turn is a 5 putting a heart draw up. BB checks, MP checks and I bet. BB raises, cutoff folds, and I three-bet. BB four-bets and I call. River is an offsuit 6 and I call BB's bet. He shows QQ. Hand 2: Same game an hour later. I have black tens in the cutoff. UTG limps, a limper in MP, and I raise. SB folds, BB calls, and UTG and MP call. Flop is JT2 rainbow. Checked to UTG who bets. MP folds, BB folds and UTG calls. Turn is an 8, completing the rainbow. UTG checks and calls my bet. River is a six, and UTG check-raises my bet. After a bit of thought, I three-bet. UTG four-bets!. I call and I'm shown Q9o. Was my play standard? Or not? |

Re: trouble with sets
i can't see how calling with the stone nuts in hand 1 could be standard? You have 4 sixes unless this is a typo.
In hand 2 3betting the river is a spew. Just call here as a legitimate draw has already been completed. |

Re: trouble with sets--correction
Correction--river was a four on hand 1.

Re: trouble with sets--correction
Hand 1 is ok. Just unfortunate to run into the nuts. If he 4 bet preflop and cold called that flop, I would be less happy with putting in the 3rd bet on the turn, but as played you played it fine.

Re: trouble with sets--correction
not a fan of preflop in hand 1. As far as turn/river combo go, I think I prefer to call turn and raise most rivers, but that's just me, again, hard not to put in 5 bets.
hand 2: every street was fine. |

Re: trouble with sets--correction
ditto, pf is iffy. every street is fine. going 4 bets on the turn is fine there but from there you can't really do much else other than call unless you have some sort of image as a screwball or he'll go nuts with QJ here against a pf 3bettor.
hand 2 is fine. |

Re: trouble with sets
I would fold hand 1 preflop, and, after reading other responses, thought I was probably too tight. However, I checked recommendation by Carson, Skalansky, Yao & Miller in their books, and they would all fold.
Hand 2: When someone ck/raises the River, they almost always have the Nutz. |

Re: trouble with sets
I would fold pf hand 1 unless the CO was loosey goosey and bad, but I doubt playing is a big mistake if it is one at all. Postflop perfect standard. Hand 2 fantastic ultra mega perfect on all streets.
