Successful Online Gaming Model Should Be Emulated Worldwide

Svenska Spel AB, a Swedish government-owned and -licensed online gaming company, has posted record profits of $685 million for 2006, thanks to its online poker division.

It has been over one year since the Swedish government’s decision to enter the online poker market. The decision has proven to be a great call for all involved.

"It has really fulfilled its purpose of bringing home a big part of Sweden's unregulated poker playing to a responsible environment within the country's borders," stated Jesper Karrbrink, the CEO of Svenska Spel AB.

In November of 2005, Svenska Spel received permission from the Swedish Government to launch Internet Poker. The goal was to transfer existing Internet poker players from an unregulated market to a regulated one.

Svenska Spel’s launch of Internet poker has exceeded all expectations. The company has managed to attract a significant number of players from Sweden's large poker community. The software, provided by Boss Media, is stable and the players feel secure in that their government (not an offshore corporation) backs the product.

To minimize the risks of gaming addiction, each poker player at svenskaspel.se sets individual limits per session, per day, per week, per month as well as maximum duration of the day, week, or month. Furthermore, players can totally exclude themselves from the gaming portal.

Perhaps Sweden’s success will provide an example for governments (USA, France) that are heading in the exact opposite direction with their recent legislation.

1. the government has no business bieng in business, which is the only real reason you need to want this not to be emulated in america.

2. nothing ruins somethng quite as fast as nationalizing it. government run businesses are by default as ineffecient as possible.

Send this to your representatives. It is mind-boggling how Vegas execs stick with the B&M status quo when they are literally missing out on billions upon billions in revenue with online poker regulation. Someone who is powerful and can lobby the government really needs to wake up and put serious effort in licensing and regulation. US Regulation is the only way to go whether it be the US govt running the sites or Vegas casinos. A carve out is first needed followed by millions in lobbying efforts.
As for Rutangs comments. Government run lotteries although inefficient are still effective. Please please just legalize and regulate so I can once again play online poker.

Not so much. There's more revenue in Nevada penny slots than all the poker sites in the world. The B&M casinos consider poker a loss leader.

Good call. It is totally incorrect to refer to Svenska Spel as an "online gaming company", it is the Swedish monopoly on gaming which has an online division. I don't know how big a part of the total gaming is online, but I wouldn't guess it's a very big part. Also, of course only part of the online business is poker.

We are not talking about B&M poker rooms. We are talking about online poker. Simple but rough estimate (please feel free to provide your own analysis):

Vegas or US Govt Run Monopolized Online Poker Gross Income:

Estimated Average Tables: 10,000 (I feel this is conservative)

Average Hourly Earnings per Table: 150

=10,000 * 150 * 24(hours) * 365(days) = 12,614,400,000

Rough Estimate of Gross Revenue is over 12 billion.

[/ QUOTE ]

Roughtly translated: Revenue 2006: 4.8 billion kroner (divide by 7 and you get $685 million)

Of that was online poker 225 million kronas ($33 million) and B&M casinos 400 million kroner ($55 mill)

I accept that you diagree with him, but let's leave the word "bias" for statistics. Anyone who claims to be objective is either deluded or deluding others.
