I'm Canadian and I like the $1 coin, but hate the $2 coin.

The government expects that people will collect the coins, thus taking them out of circulation- this helps curb inflation to some extent.

coins: 5c, 25c

bills: 1, 2, 5, 20, 100, 500

You won my vote.

While personally I would like to see a 500 dollar bill, this would be a major pain in the ass at retail outlets, if you get 2 or 3 people who are trying to break a 500 dollar bill you would easily wipe out their till or waste a ton of time waiting for the cashier to get change for you.

Paraphrase: "We think Americans are going to keep the coins out of circulation, and that will keep the coins in circulation."
Sounds like a plan.

Besides, how do you get the $1 coin into the stippers G-string?

[/ QUOTE ]

every time I am up in Canada, I like using the $1 and $2 coin. It really doesn't end up being a fuckload of coins that you carry.

Someone said there's no way an anti-drug-dealer, anti-terrorist government would put 1k bills back into circulation.

Ideally, same as above:
Coins: 5c, 25c, $1, $2 (commemorative garbage on the $2s so nobody has to use them)
Bills: $5, $20, $100, $500 (Euro-style polymer materials to make bills indestructible)
Plaques: 1k, 5k, 25k (These would need some kind of uniquely identifiable GPS transmitter with absurdly long battery life permanently embedded to make the government happy and make it easier to locate the terrorist who hides 12 billion in cash, and make it easier to track down the culprit when a 25k plaque gets stolen by a pickpocket)

Since they are doing all the presidents in order, I find it funny that William Henry Harrison's coin will be the 'fresh new dollar coin' for longer than he was a president.

Would be pretty sweet if they adjusted mintage of the various coins based on popularity/usefulness during their term. W.H. Harrison would be a true collector's item then with a tiny mintage.

So if pennies are worth more than one cent, both the production costs and the actual value of the materials...

Should I be scooping up every single penny I can?
Does this make penny-whoring a +EV prospect?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, but it is illegal to melt pennies (and nickels) for their component metals.

I'm kind of surprised so many people are so against dollar-coins.

I think paper dollar-bills suck.

Somebody mentioned how annoying it is trying to use it on a vending machine.
No f'ing joke. It's just annoying.

Paper $1 bills are just dumb.

Pretty much agree with metetron on his arguments (except that bit about coins in the little pouch in the wallet...just not my style).

Somebody pointed out that $0.25 has been our largest commonly used denomination coin for quite some time.
So long that I suspect a dollar is now worth less than a quarter has been for quite some time.

So, basically this is the equivilent of going 25 or 30 years back in time to 1975 or something and us having a paper-bill for quarters.
It's just stupid.

Also agree that abolishing the penny is a good idea but evidently there's some significant resistence to this from a nation full of penny-lovers.

Saw a story about this on CNN a few months back and it was stated that each penny now costs $0.03 to make.

I believe the country is losing millions of dollars just from the cost of minting all those damn pennies.

If losing that much money to keep some stupid 'penny tradition' alive isn't a ridiculous waste then I don't know what is.

Yeah yeah...so what's a few million bucks here or there for our country that spends X amount for education or defense or the Iraq war or whatever?
Big whoop.
Well, it seems there's a sick amount of stupid mis-spending from our govt. Save a few million here or there by getting rid of the stupidest of the stupid and it can actually start to add up.
