Default Evidence that you don\'t need to worry about going to jail

I'll make it short and sweet. Robert "Bob" Monday has long been running a game in Indy that I played in. Now, the cops raided it awhile back and he was in all kinds of crap with the police AND the IRS. Guess what? He's back in business in a different location in town. It was even on the news:
http://www.theindychannel.com/news/7411098/detail.html

Now if this guy doesnt go to jail and admits to tax evasion for about 3 grand/night, then how the hell are any players here on this site going to jail?

End of discussion,

SB

We aren't. And the two or three people who are fanning the flames on this issue are complete idiots. Taxes are one thing, people may well be facing fines and penalties, but players going to jail for playing online poker -- complete foolishness.

even for taxes u aren't going to jail. Bob Monday, the guy in the article above, probably made a million in cash with his illegal casino. Not only did he get off easy, but he's still operating on the NW side of town with a new clientele.

This article doesn't mention anything at all about him getting away with this.

Anecdotes establish nothing.

Looks like you didn't read very carefully. From the article:

[ QUOTE ]

No arrest was immediately made, but police said the man would face felony charges, including tax charges, Spehler reported.

[/ QUOTE ]

Now, what do you think the penalty for those felony charges is going to be? Jail? Yessiree!

Likely his case just hasn't come to trial yet. Being out on bond is not the same as being safe from jail.

Nah, he got off. Fellas there's only one thing to know about all of this: Your uncle Sam has a great sense of humor, and really isn't such a bad guy at the end of the day.

one other thing to consider for the people scared of getting in trouble...

Jay Cohen was sent to prison for running a huge online gambling book....wsex.com

He made millions, and only served 18 months in jail.

Now, I don't want any part of serving 18 months in jail, but my point is....

The government spent tons of time and money to go after a huge online sportsbook, and in the end they only got a 18 month prison sentence.

Do you think they are going to bother with going after some dude who's made $5k playing internet poker? What about the dude that actually lost $5k playing poker?

I don't care if you made $250,000 playing online poker, the government is NOT going to mess with you.....as long as you pay your taxes.

For people not paying taxes....none of the above applies to you.

I'm not sure if I'm one of those idiots you mentioned, but the question that I always addressed was COULD you go to jail for tax evasion, not WOULD you.
