I really don't think the writers of this show would go that way, too easy, too big of a cop out.

They like teasing at it, like when Hugo was in the mental hospital and they did the whole "maybe its his delusion" angle.

I feel like the writers are too creative to go back on that crutch.

Desmond turns key. Goes back in time to when he had a concussion. Starts vaguely remembering how he did it all before. Follows basically the same path. Repeats.

I'm guessing at the time that the show happens, last time Desmond went back, he told Penny what to look out for. Hence her trying to find a magnetic anomoly at the end of the last season. I also guess he's tried to prevent the turning of the key, so that he sees locke giving the speach, claires hut getting hit by lightning, and claire drowning.
