Default If you had your own nameserver, could you register domain names free?

Register them yourself and just have them re-direct. Instead of having to pay godaddy like $8 for each domain.

no. a nameserver doesn't make you a domain registrar. we use a nameserver at my friend's colocated box in order to manage multiple domain names and their subdomains.

Your own nameserver just allows you to handle your own DNS for your websites.
