I've had similar problems and my mistake was that I had entered the wrong WPA key, so it just kept trying to connect with the wrong key.

I'll retry the key.

its looking more and more like I'll just have to stick with using a long network cable.

Find your routers IP address if you don’t already know it you can find it by
Start up \ Accessories \ Command Prompt "ipconfig"
Enter the IP address into your web browser
Log into your router go through the options and look for DHCP server and make sure it’s selected.
