I had a great laugh from slimeywater's post.

This thread reminds me of an all purpose optimization you can perform on both friends and enemies.

Don't roll your eyes until you finish reading this entire post:

I've figured out the optimal lottery strategy (beyond choosing numbers that humans avoid, or the 0 or 1 ticket binary).

Communicate to both your friends and enemies in a credible manner that you've purchased a ticket(s) with the specific numeric choices listed. Tell them that you love them and that if you win you'll share the winnings with them 50/50.

You can vary the number of tickets you've claimed to have bought, just so that it almost relates to this thread if you are drunk.

Of course, you don't actually buy a single ticket, but you get some mileage out of this exercise, free goodwill! Docile enemies! and the off chance that someone will share their winnings, hopefully you have thousands of friends and enemies!

Lol, off topic, but I couldn't resist!

Okay, is my post stupider?

Are we supposed to evaluate each case idependantly? For example i would give maybe 20k to a random poor african kid in a vacuum, but if i were to do this to everyone i would quickly run out money.

[/ QUOTE ]

You have to assume the kid in africa already has $50k and an income. But anyway I think it has to be a one-shot deal. There are probably millions of people I would do this for if it only cost me a penny, but there's no way I would do it for all of them.

This sounds similar to a gimmick some deadbeats at the racetrack used to pull years ago (as told to me by my father). The deadbeat would go up to unsuspecting marks and tell them that he had inside information on the next race. He offered to share that with the mark if the mark would agree to buy him a $2 ticket (or $5 or $10, etc.) on that horse. The deadbeat explained that he was on hard times and that he only gains if they both win (as opposed to charging for the information) and that he has nothing to gain by lying. Sometimes the mark was "allowed" to hold the tickets, if he was apprehensive.

Of course, the deadbeat went to many marks and would have action on all the horses in the race. He only had to keep track of which marks were betting which horses to collect his guaranteed money. And if approached by a loser he would be apologetic and lament how they "both" had been unlucky.

I don't know if that still goes on (probably does), but I see a version of it all the time with sports betting. Some tout advertises the pick-of-the-week, or year, or century, or whatever. They back that up with a weeks, months or a year's "free" picks if they are wrong. It will only cost you $whatever for the pick this time. Why anyone would want to pay for some guy flipping a coin (or whatever) for you, backed up by a year's worth of free flips, is beyond me (but there are those out there who will). I always wondered if that same tout has another name where he gives the opposite bet, to guarantee some happy suckers, so the suckers buy the next week's pick.
