Default $230 case study: picking your spots vs a Super AGGRO

Hi all,

Just thought I would post a familiar, frustrating situation: card dead against a super lag.

Opponent here is a super aggressive player. We have tangled a few times. He 3 bets very light, and my additional notes on him are "LET HIM BLUFF YOU; 3 bets v light, and just your calling ranges cause he likes to push small aces; punish his 4x+BB raises but wait for it"

This HH is hopefully going to show a few things
-don't limp against super aggros unless you are going to reraise a % of the time
-there's no harm in being a super nit if you pick the right spots to make stands and incorporate some bluffing into your play
-make smaller raises against a guy who will have a wide 3-bet range
-loosen your calling range against such an opponent.

Anyways, here is the hand history. Someone else can clean it up if you want and I'll repost it.

I noticed about half way down he started folding the button. I might have reraised a few random hands.

Nice game! I think you played it well, and you waited for your hand. A couple hands there that you folded I think I would've called. For example, against a lag opponent, I would call a raise with any king, and then float the flop, but fold a turn bet. Oftentimes your king high is good.

Also, what was with the folding of A8 in the first hand? since you know the guy is a lag player, I think I would've called with the A8 or reraised.

Since he kept on raising you after you limp in. It might have been wise to just limp in with your strong hands like AK and JJ, and let him raise you so you can reraise him again.

I thought you took an unnecessary risk going all in with your gutshot K,5 when another 6 came on the board. You couldn't be representing a 6 because if you had trips you wouldn't go all in.

Overall, I learned quite a bit from your game. I am a LAG heads up player, and I play most hands that are suited or connected in some way, even to a raise. I should probably fold more.

No offense, but you played terribly and picked your spots just as bad. This is exactly how you don't want to play an aggressive opponent. What you want to do against someone like C.K. (who I've play a few times) is limp more often, but not eliminating pre-flop raising altogether. You want to be raising with hands that you're comfortable calling a reraise with and/or reraising all-in with. Also you don't want to be the one bluffing, that Q6 play was retarded, sorry. You want to catch a bluffer, not bluff a bluffer. Pushing big hits immediatley, not missing bets is far more effective and when the situation presents itself where he's being aggressive, setting a nice trap. Even if you end up wittled down to 700, 800 or 900 catching an aggressive player tends to tilt them and winning a big pot will give you momentem with either a close to even stack, or a small lead. Rarely will you go an entire game without a positive situation presenting itself against an aggressive opponent. The only excuse for bluffing an over-aggressive is if you made a critical error early to put yourself under 1000 or if you took a bad beat. As long as you implement this strategy early enough after recognizing that your opponent is in fact over aggressive you should be able to put yourself in position to win.

G,

If you played 1000 matches against this opponent with both of you playing a game / style consistent with the one in the hand history(w/o tilt, lack of focus, etc.), how many would you expect to win without any major adjustments to your style other than what you already showed?

Well, since max said it, I'll agree...but on one of the hands you folded J9d for almost the min. reraise. You made it 90 (15/30), then he made it 210. That's just awful.

CK is nowhere close to a super lag, I think he is one of the tighter heads up players.

hand #1 is brutal folding A8 for a raise lol
the AK limp was pretty bad
folding KQ to the lead on the J9 flop was brutal
folding J9 suited to the 210 reraise was bad
A7 flop shove after preflop reraise was terrible
the Q6 push was terrible

I wish I had something more constructive to add other than do the opposite of what u did in all these hands. I guess raise button more and stop limping. He seemed like a super lag to you because you limped and folded so much.

spoken like a true doormat. this is some of the worst advice i've ever seen lol. yea just limp all day, let him run u over, only bet huge with the goods. outstanding!

To beat the player described above you have to beat him at his own game. You need to come over the top of him preflop or start check raising him alot on the flop, float, whatever but DO NOT lie down and take it lol. if he is the type to come over the top alot preflop then punish him for it, 4 bet him all in preflop or start raising his flop continuation bets.

Lol you wanna justify why that's bad advice or just berate it like an idiot. I'm not saying sit down and let him destroy you, but you have to be prepared to be 3-bet fairly often, so why standard raise continuously to help his cause in wittling down your stack. Raising with hands that you can either move over the top of his 3-bet or comfortably call a reraise with simply help in preventing a difficult decision which in my eyes is te ultimate goal.

ya my bad here's my logic..

By only raising good hands vs him you play right into his hands, you become predictable and weak. When it goes fold fold fold all match and then all of sudden u 3 bet him or fire 2 or 3 barrels it will appear that u have the goods. If you are advocating this strategy, which i still don't agree with, it should be to setup a couple bluffs before the start of 25/50 at which point aggression is expected.

If he 3 bets you light don't look at it as a difficulty, it's an oppurtunity. These opponents will continuation bet every flop, so start calling those 3 bets and raising their continuation bets. If you appear to be real weak so far in the match you're never getting played back at in that spot. Or you can start 4 betting all in with a whole range of hands, remember your hand doesn't matter if he's not gonna call. You can't be afraid to stick it in with J10 if u keep getting run over.

Also the idea of "preventing a difficult decision" is just another way of phrasing a bad play. Your justification for making a play should never be to avoid to a tough decision, it should be cause its correct
