Default 3 Players at Same Table in In Large Tourny

Me and two of my friends joined a multi table tournament on Pokerstars and all 3 of us started at the same table. There were 889 entrants including us (9 players/table) What are the odds of this?

Assuming that you are each independently seated at one of 889 equally likely seats on 97 tables of 9 plus 2 tables of 8, the probability that you will all be at the same table is

[97*C(9,3)+2*C(8,3)] / C(889,3)

=~ 1 in 14,129.

A more simply explanation, though not as exact is...

Given that Player 1 is already sat at a 9 person table, then the odds of player 2 being at same table is 8/888 and Player 3 is then 7/887 . When you multiply this out, you get about 1/14065. The slight difference between this and the previous answer might be the small chance that Player 1 is sat at the 8 person table.

Correct, and that can be made exact like this:

(873/889 * 8/888 * 7/887) + (16/889 * 7/888 * 6/887)

=~ 1 in 14,129.
