How to determine \'Girl friend\' or \'Girlfriend\' (if a woman says)?
Ever meet a girl and talk to her for a bit. Enter into another conversation trying to decide your next move. You overhear her talking, and she mentions something along the lines of 'doing something with my girl-friend. Then you just spend some time trying to figure out what her sexual preference is.
Obviously, the situation is different for every situation. For me, this happened recently at a business function where it would have been strange for me to inquire further. She was my site contact. A collegue asked her what she was doing this weekend. She said she was having dinner with her girl-friend tonight, followed by a viewing tomorrow. The collegue makes a comment that at least her weekend would start off well. The rest of the time, I was trying to decide her preference. It kept my mind occupied and was amusing. Any way to get some subtle hints in this situation? I looked for the obvious of an engagement ring - none. I wouldn't have a chance with her either way, but I'm just curious for future reference.

Um assume straight until you see her making out with a girl.

OMG... 99% of the time they mean a female friend. Just friend. always assume this is the case until clearly proven otherwise

I guess I've just been hanging out in the gayborhood a little too much where you just assume the other way.
It was in the 'burbs, so you're probably right. But, I also typically expect the plural if it's a straight girl. Either way, much better chance that she meaning female friend playing the odds.
