Re: Why is PokerStars doing nothing?

[ QUOTE ] Neteller is still making a ton of money off of pokerstars for non-us accounts. Pokerstars could atleast put some kind of pressure on them to start paying people to give some credibility to the industry. [/ QUOTE ] Cmon now. The United States Department of Justice has frozen Neteller accounts of U.S. customers. How could PokerStars have the slightest influence on the situation? [/ QUOTE ] Maybe Stars could offer a 100k freeroll to DOJ members if they stop? |

Re: Why is PokerStars doing nothing?
[ QUOTE ]
I find it amazing that people are still blaming Neteller for what happened. If this is a site where "educated" players convene, where we've had dozens of posts outlining what happened, then there's no hope of the casual player ever coming back. Our very own DoJ froze your funds - what part of that statement don't you understand? And it's not in their interest to ever release it. Well, you dealt with "illegal" operations, serves you right. The DoJ would like nothing better than for Neteller to go down - European players are probably very nervous right now. For all those people blaming Neteller - just how on earth is Neteller supposed to get you your money? On the way to your bank it got "seized" - Neteller doesn't have it anymore. Party paid off everyone. You think Neteller didn't want to do the same? [/ QUOTE ] I don't think the US DOJ can go to any coutry it wants and freeze the accounts of legitimate businesses. Neteller has to be a willing accomplice in some way, or they are looking to hold the money until an agreement is worked out where they will not be proscuted in the US. |

Re: Why is PokerStars doing nothing?
The way I understand it, DOJ seized $55M in EFTs to an from Neteller. Neteller is now holding on to US account moneys partly to compensate themselves in case they don't get that money back. Also, they have the excuse that transferring money to US customers might be considered illegal by DOJ.

Re: Why is PokerStars doing nothing?
If they send money now - new money will be seized as their partner american banks been forced to do so.
Used to work in a bank dealing with investments and I have only seen something like this once before but when the money lands in the american bank which redirects it to you it is frozen instantly! |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Even if thats true . . . [/ QUOTE ] You say this as though there is any doubt. The Department of Justice announcing that they've frozen the funds wasn't proof enough for you? [/ QUOTE ] Where does the DOJ admit to having frozen our funds? Link please. In general the U.S. claims jurisdiction over any business with a presence in the U.S. i.e. U.S. customers, which Neteller certainly has. See the Legislation forum for various detailed discussions. 2.) It's the U.S. government which has estabished that it can do whatever it wants anyway. |

[/ QUOTE ] I realize this has happened.. But why does the DOJ have authority over a nonUS business? [/ QUOTE ] Presumably they froze EFTs between Neteller and US banks. It is much easier for them to do that than to touch neteller funds outside the US. Now it is possible that federal courts will rule that what they did is not consistant with the laws or the Constitution and it could also be challenged at the World Trade Organization, but the DOJ probably can freeze funds being transfered to and from US banks. |
