[ QUOTE ]
A friend of mine really wants a "cool" dagger/sword for her birthday. I won't pretend any knowledge on this subject, but her and I both think the type of sword in Kill Bill is really freakin' neat. If I wanted to order something like this (katana?), can I do it online. If so, where and how much? Does it come sharpened? Edify me. [/ QUOTE ] If you earn enough Action Points at Doyle's Room, you can order swords from the store with them. They have a bunch from Kill Bill, Zatoichi, Eragon, and who knows what else at this point. Contrary to another assertion in this thread, swords DO break. If you're buying something for looks, you want stainless steel. It's shiny. It also takes a really crappy edge, if one at all, so no, it will not be sharp by any decent standards. Depending on what state you live in, it may even be illegal to have a sharpened sword around, so it may be hard to find someone to put an edge on regardless of what you buy. For a sharp edge, you need high carbon steel (more likely to break), or as the really good katanas are made, low carbon with a tempered high carbon edge. This would be overkill though. There are tons of cheap, crappy swords around, and tons of slightly better ones that will at least stay together and not rattle around when you whip it out to show people. The difference is generally in the price. If/when you do buy something, make sure you get a sword with a full tang and not a rat tail tang. The latter are the junkiest of the junky. You did mention she wanted a "dagger/sword" so I don't know what she would be interested in. It could be anything from a katana to a basket-hilt broadsword. I think you should find out if she wants something based on a movie she saw (e.g., Highlander) or perhaps based on her personal lineage (if she's Scottish, a basket-hilt broadsword or dirk would work). Or you can check out a slightly better-informed forum here: http://www.swordforum.com/ |

I never understood having a sword. [/ QUOTE ] I get to "nerd up" here I guess. :/ I have a pair of sai, a katana and wakizashi set, a throwing dagger, a strictly ornamental south american sword, and two flails. I know how to use the sai and swords, and when I was deeper into martial arts would use them for workouts/practice. The ornamental sword admittedly sucks, and I got it when I was much younger and thought it looked cool. The flails I found at a garage sale and was amazed that they were real, so bought them for like $20. Ray |

What she wants to use the sword for makes a big difference. Is she going to be doing tameshigiri (cutting rolled up mats)? Iaido forms? Just to look at and wave around every once in a while?

I doubt the sword would be used for anything... but it might prompt her to pursue weapons training. Who knows.

If she wants to actually do some training, then a bokken or shinai are probably the way to go. Those are real cheap compared to a real sword and much safer for someone just starting out. |

If you'd like to wager against her weight or any other characteristics, name the $ and I'll see if she'd be interested in supplying some customized OOT pics.
