Cervical Cancer: God\'s Punishment for Whores?
from the HPV Vaccine Wiki:
[ QUOTE ] In the USA, several conservative religious groups have publicly opposed the concept of making HPV vaccination mandatory for pre-adolescent girls, citing fears that vaccination against a sexually transmitted disease might send a subtle message that detracts from an abstinence-based approach to sexual health. [/ QUOTE ] So would the same be said if there were an AIDS vaccine because it would promote sex and elicit drug use? Should this be something that is given to all girls on the level of chicken pox vaccines, etc? I'm assuming that most people here are against the whole "promoting condom use promotes sex" etc. argument, anyone want to make the argument that the above-quoted problem with the HPV vaccine makes sense? [ps- the profanity filter won't allow "sl.uts" but it will allow "whores"? |

Why do you assume promoting condom use doesn't promote sex? I would guess that it does.
I'm all for promoting sex btw |

Re: Cervical Cancer: God\'s Punishment for Whores?
By that logic, the religious right would support vaccinating gays and drug users with AIDS.
The abstinence based approach is the reason why teen pregnancy rate is ridiculously higher than it should be. Keeping taboo topics in the closet has been a thorn in humanity's side for way too long. |

Re: Cervical Cancer: God\'s Punishment for Whores?
hopefully this vaccine does it's job. if it does it will save lives by preventing cancer and lots of heartache for people that get the std.
one thing i've read is that they're unsure whether or not vaccinating against the couple of strains this vaccine prevents will cause the other less common strains to surge. let's hope not. i don't think that argument of not giving the vaccine holds water. teenagers are going to have sex with or without a vaccine and there definitely aren't any teenagers not having sex because they're afraid of hpv. most people don't even know what it is until they get it. the religious right needs to take their heads out of their asses. |

Re: Cervical Cancer: God\'s Punishment for Whores?
Ugh, it's a crappy argument. Men and women get HPV. If a guy gets hpv, he could marry a virgin who follows all the "rules" of the religious right, and she could still end up with cancer.
I'll never understand why the religious right is opposed to improving the quality of peoples life. Apparently, in thier eyes Gods will means suffering, and never enjoying the earth they believe god created for us. I've already gotten 2/3rds of my vaccine. I'm not going to use that as an excuse to sleep around as much as possible, but I like the idea of never getting that cancer. |

Re: Cervical Cancer: God\'s Punishment for Whores?
kitty - i'm pretty sure that while hpv increases your chance of getting cervical cancer significantly (thus this vaccine decreases it), you're still able to get cervical cancer without having hpv...
