the raise was designed to A) build a pot if i do flop a set while not detracting callers w moderate hands behind me or B) if noone behind me calls i c bet if checked to to try and steal it. is this dumb thinking or ok?

Better to call preflop with a small pair. If you are going to raise, raise more since you are OOP. You build the pot with a marginal hand OOP as played.

On the flop, bet more. Turn is probably OK. This is why you don't build the pot OOP.

Not a real bad play, you raised three times the blinds. Then made a continuation bet of 180 which was about 60% the pot. I would rather just limp with 5's. As you see he still called you 180 and if he has a A and you hit a set on the flop (Like if you had 6's not 5's). He most likely would have fallen for a check raise on the turn.

its a bit of a nonconsequential hand, everything lies in your decision to 'build the pot' preflop. this doesnt make much sense because your likely foldign the BB out and getting it HU OOP w/ a low pair. just complete preflop.
