I saw these on CNN and they look like litebrite boards with the image of the mooninite flipping the bird. How it can be mistaken for a bomb is beyond me and how these signs "Scared a whole city" is absolutely insane.

The issue is that this wasn't their idea, they were hired by a marketing firm with instructions from Turner Broadcasting.

This is akin to arresting US troops in Iraq for murder. Yes, they killed some people, which is technically murder, but they were also told to do so, which absolves them of liability.

So who's fault is this in your opinion?

[/ QUOTE ]
If I get hired and paid to kill someone, am I not criminally liable for the murder?

I generally agree with you, but this argument is ridiculous.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you get hired to kill someone and do it, you are criminally liable.

If you get hired to rob a liquor store and do, ditto.

It's because you know that these activities are illegal.

If you get hired to randomly place crude advertisements all over a city and do it, you should be able to assume that the people who hired you took care of the legal necessities before hand. ie: sign permits, etc.

Sure, in hindsight it is easy to disparage the response that the Boston government had to the whole incident.

I think before forming an opinion on this, these are some good questions to ask:
If it was an anarchy sign instead of a cartoon figure, would you have been more approving of Boston's response?
If instead of LED signs, these were unmarked red boxes scattered in various subway stations, would you agree with the charges posted, and agree the perpetrators are criminally irresponsible?

I don't need to be second guessing everything I do because I'm afraid of what the authorities think about it.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think a pretty good rule of thumb is to not do anything that could potentially cause an emergency response, and then you don't have to worry about potential consequences. if you can't separate what these things are and are not, then I have no sympathy for you when you're arrested.

[/ QUOTE ]

I have sympathy for you in this thread. How in the world could anyone think that putting these things around a city would cause a [censored] bomb scare? You are way wrong here.

“It’s clear the intent was to get attention by causing fear and unrest that there was a bomb in that location,” Assistant Attorney General John Grossman said at their arraignment.

Does anyone other than the AG believe that is the case?

[/ QUOTE ]

I find it hard to believe a judge will actually buy this.

Manny - fair point - no one should be scape-goated for someone's poor decision making abilities.

But again, it's the baseline awareness in a post 9/11 world that Turner / hippie artists should have had, that in my mind, holds them somewhat accountable for this fiasco.

My question to Boston is: Would terrorists use a video game-like LED pattern flipping off ("as hard as he can") to say "the bomb is right here?"

Meh. Not really. I understand not talking about it, but they could have been funnier or just not did this press conference.
