[ QUOTE ] You can't pick anything up or sit down? Lies. [/ QUOTE ] Don't be such a meathead. I like squats and DLs as much as anyone, but they would definitely not be possible if he has very little range of motion in his ankle. OP, to answer your question, you can do leg curls, leg extensions and stiff-legged dead lifts. Those require very little ankle motion. Leg presses might also be a possibility. [/ QUOTE ] Excellent recommendation. Mix in swimming with a kick board. Don't cruise in the pool. Go as hard as you can for as long as you can. Repeat this until you feel like vomiting. It is great cardio and your legs will be surprisingly strong. |

Squats. Deadlifts. [/ QUOTE ] wonderful advice once again. i'm going to reccomend (since i have a similar ankle problem, albeit likely worse) movements that don't require a lot of stability and motion. hacksquats for example. less motion on the ankle joint and the stability of a machine. still a great exercise though. leg extensions with the pad on the lower part of your shins. this decreases the pull on your ankle joint. lots of hamstring curls. i wouldn't start squatting or doing leg presses until you felt very comfortable with the above. and then you'll want to take baby steps. remember- it is a marathon, not a sprint. |

Re: Leg Workouts (f\'d up ankle)
Everyone in this thread is wrong. You need to see a doctor, or goto a sports medicine specialist, they are going to be able to tell you exactly what you should be doing, I wouldnt listen to anyone in this thread as far as getting reccomendations becuse no one is able to know exactly what you can and cant do with your problem.

Reccomending hacksquats is worse than reccomending deadlifts.

Reccomending hacksquats is worse than reccomending deadlifts. [/ QUOTE ] you're an idiot. i just gave this guy advice from a very similar situation. i have eight screws, two plates, and several other metal objects in my ankle. i too have a limited range of motion. i went to three ortho's who all told me the same thing: lift as heavy as you want, but take it slow and try and avoid lifts that cause a lot of motion in the ankle joint. hacksquats are wonderful exercises that provide the weight of a squat but the option to do them at several different angles, thus minimizing the impact on the ankle joint. they also provide the stability that this guy is going to need, b/c when you take off from lifting due to an ankle injury, you lose the strength in the muscles around it and it can be very shaky(literally). deadlifts are a bad choice b/c when you lose mobility and range of motion in your ankle it prohibits you from squatting down, bending over completely, and the sheer explosive nature of coming out of the bottom of a deadlift puts a lot of stress on all of your joints. i am speaking from experience and having gotten the advice of several professionals. /guids takes his foot out of his mouth now |

Re: Leg Workouts (f\'d up ankle)
which exercise looks more natural, and doesnt rely on balance as much? PS, I just realized that you may have meant this: thats technically not a hacksquat, thats using a hacksquat machine. A hacksquat is a deadlift with the barbell behind you. I agre that if you are talking about using a hacksquat machine, its safer, a hacksquat def isnt though, it requires much more ankle stablizing ability than a normal deadlift. |

guys, since we're on the topic of injuries. Can anyone recommend leg exercises for injured knees? Both, cartilage.

Re: Leg Workouts (f\'d up ankle)
Alex,
I'm gonna say the same things I did before. If you're injured you might be doing squats with a broomstick or the bar for a good while. And you might be doing partials. If your doc okays it. Stick with them. Ditto for deadlifts. If you have to pull the bar off a pin (more like rack pulls then) and work down while you rehab your injury. Thats fine. But to pigeon hole yourself into relatively poor movements due to an injury which may or may not get better kinda sucks. If you really can't sit or lift things from the ground without a lot of pain, then weight lifting is low on the priority list. |
