I tip the dealers just before they're tapped out whether I'm winning pots or not. I never liked the hand-by-hand thing.

No. Though it's funny you should mention it cause I suggested the same last time I was there!

I thought you were a dealer? I'm surprised you only tip at the end of a down. You might get kicked out of some underground card clubs if you do that, it pisses off the dealers and in turn management.

Really? I would be quite surprised if you got kicked out of a club for something like this... Mgmt makes $$ off rake and in order to collect it, they need players. I have heard (in the past) dealers complaining privately to players and reminiding them that they work on tips alone - but this never went "upstairs" to mgmt. As far as I know it is easier to replace a disgrunteled dealer than a (non-tipping but otherwise good) player.

I am in Toronto FWIW, but have played in underground clubs in Vancouver, NY and (obviously) here in T.O.

My dealers are averaging about $500 per 7 hour shift. I am happy for them, but the players are tipping WAY too much. I personally tip $1 for small pots, $2 for $50-$100 pots, and up to $5 for really big pots. I see some players win a $500 pot and tip $20 regularly.

I ask because I know of a place in the west end of Toronto that has a 4-8 limit with a half kill.

I am, and someone had a problem with how or when I tipped, I'd laugh and give up my seat anytime they wanted me to.

Dealers could care less, especially once they know you and are used to it. I tip a little bit better than average anyway (as do most people who work on tips), so it's not really an issue. No one's getting stiffed.
