MT2R, you are the biggest NCAA bball homer ever. I don't care if it takes more time to run a play, or if everyone has to play D together. The players are much worse overall and that is why they take so long to score and they have to play D together.

Can you explain this comment? I played DII ball under a coach who was a former DI assistant and I wouldn't exactly call our defenses "complex." I understand that theres a lot more pressing in college, so perhaps you're saying that theres more defensive presses to remember than in the NBA.

I don't really understand how anyone could watch the two games, study the two games, and think otherwise.
College defenses have to stop offensive sets that have 35 seconds to work with to obtain a quality shot. In addition, there are no illegal defenses. The off-the-ball motion on both defense and offense is much more a part of the game in college ball. Pro ball seems to always boil down to isolate and use superior match-ups.

Imo once you know the basics of playing defense there is nothing complex about man-to-man defense really. The most common thing that the average rec player doesn't understand is rotations off of double teams. Basically theres two kinds of help: Big man stepping up to help on a driving guard OR guard going down to double team a big man.

With the former:
-Big man steps up to help on driving guard
-Far weak side defender fills in on that big man's man
-Near weak side defender plays sort of in between the two perimeter players(his man and the man of the guy who just left) and has next pass out
-after the pass out, pretty much scramble to get on a man

With the latter
-guard doubles down
-Near weak side guard has next pass
-guy doubling down scrambles back to open man


Zone is a bit more complex only because there are different ones and it'd take too long to go through them all. However its not that complicated at all imo.


In the end, I think its a rather moot debate as neither NBA defense nor college defense is that hard to learn imo(although I obviously can't speak from experience regarding NBA defense). Its not like football where there are tons of plays to memorize.

Funny thing is, last time Arenas played in a college game, it was against Duke.

By "he" I meant OP, but I see that I was wrong now. I've been in AC the past few days and havn't been following things, so I didn't know about Arenas saying that.
