Ypu don't mention what qualifiers you have. Is it any A's full of Jacks beaten. You could add some qualifications to that -- like A's full of jacks beaten by Quads (or better) and require the Quads to have a pocket pair. By doing this you make the bad bead harder to hit, but it doesn't sound as bad.

[/ QUOTE ]

Good point. Ours is Aces full of Jacks beaten by anything. I like your idea man. I think I'll push this one to "the man". Thanks!

Question: have you ever considered removing the jackpot? I am not insinuating that no jackpot is the best option for your players, but its something to consider as an option. If the players are cognizant of the extra juice being dropped every round, some may avoid the room. If all of the competition has a jackpot drop then of course I'd keep it.

How big is your room? Must be big if you're hitting As over Js every week for 10 weeks. My room was 18 tables and we didn't hit it that often. Though some weeks it was hit often, there were droughts.

We have 18 tables. Yeah, the "once a week" for 2.5 months was a bit rough. It usually doesn't hit nearly that often. Just a wierd few months.

Our 5/5 ($5 limit, yeah it sucks) games BB is usually $30K - $40K. It has gotten to to the $130K range.

Thanks for the ideas.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's being hit quite a bit for that size of a room. Likely just a run of variance. Our room was 18 tables also.

Another way to ratchet it up a bit is, since its As full of Js, making it so you have to have an A in one hand for it to pay. So a board of AAAxx won't pay if someone has QQ and someone else JJ. Our room ran it that way for awhile.

Yeah, I guess I didn't mention that three Aces on the board doesn't qualify in our room and both hole cards must play.

Juanez, I have played at the Lodge (not too secret who you are) and will not do so in the future if current policies continue.

Your rake is 4 + 2 in a $5 spread game. That's simply ridiculous, and for that rake you offer no comps, nothing but $5 holdem ( I know the law sucks on the $5 front, but there are games other than holdem), dealers that are on average slower than some of the other Colorado rooms, and have a smoking room.

You used to have a monopoly on the fish, but that's long gone. At this point, you need to address your issues or lose the poker room war. If you do lose, I will not be sorry to see you go.

[/ QUOTE ]Even if people aren't jackpot-rake aware, the effect on the game of raking it beyond reasonable levels is horribly destructive to the lodge 2/5 game. All the fish are instantly stuck, so they tighten up, and basically no one can beat that rake at a tight/nitty table.

The 5/5 games are more live because the rake is proportionally lower. However, a lot of people don't like the collusion going on at about 1/2 the tables (more on weekends). I don't mind it personally - it can be easily beaten if someone wants to take the time - but the strategy that beats it is so damn boring that I would never willingly play that game.

The "social gambling" home games down the hill destroy you guys so utterly that there's no reason any rational person would play in your casino unless they have no friends or their wife wants to play slots.

So just to confirm - you're talking about a progressive Bad Beat Jackpot. And it seems like your playing audience are jackpot chasers. So an alternative solution/idea - go to a fixed bad beat jackpot 30K, 50K, 75K - you do the math and also institute a high hand jackpot. You can vary the high hand (hh) jackpot around certain promotions and playing hours. I know it gets the jackpot chasers out around here. Most popular ones are the $500 every hour and $400 every hour. The room I play in its the hh promos that really drive in the players. For the month of Dec. they ran the $500 one and the room was double full the whole time. Something to consider.

Here is the run-down of BBs in LA (that I know of) and some extra promos that are done.

From most popular casino to least.

Commerce: Any Aces full beaten by any Aces full, both cards must play. Super: Any quads 9 beaten by better quads, on certain hours. The bad-beats are relatively small but do get into the 20,000 mark.

Bicycle: Aces full of Jacks beaten by four of a kind or better. Super is the same. Every night between 3 and 6 am, they draw a table, the winning table spreads a card, and the winning player spins a wheel, winning anything from $50 to $200. Between 1 and 5 pm (?), they pay the high hand of the day $500. This promo is only offered to higher stakes.

Hollywood park: Any aces full beaten by quads, both card DON'T have to play.

Hustler: Aces full of Tens beaten? Also, they have the Pocket Aces promo already mentioned during certain hours.

The BB's are all pretty much the same across the board, except some casino's offer the Super as well. I think that they combine the two BB's if the super hits, or maybe not. I doubt anyone is going to complain about not getting their extra 15 grand after winning 50.

Crystal park: If Aces are cracked, spin the wheel.

Other promo's I have heard or seen: High hand of the hour recieves certain monies, depending on the strenght of the hand. IE, quads gets $40, down to flush gets $15, etc.

But yes, while the posters on this site probably don't like BBJ's, pay mind that many players don't see poker as a beatable game, nor are they interested in playing well. Just observe a table in play. Really, all they feel like they are doing in "letting off steam" (defies my comprehension), or basically looking to have a good social time. They really don't see the difference between playing poker and playing a scratch-off ticket, so, yes, the bad beat draws them in.

I think you are probably in the wrong place if you are looking for what people want in a BBJP - most of the jackpot-chasers are lousy players, not 2p2 types.

I think the thing to do is to make it harder to hit without really telling anyone - as one poster already recommended. I like A's full of J's or better, beaten by quads or better, both cards must play, must have a pocket pair for the quads. This should be much harder to hit, but you can play it off like it's just a small tweak of the rules. You could even go to A's full of Q's for the loser and not make it feel like a huge change.

The other thing to do, if you don't already, is fund a reserve jackpot. So when the jackpot gets to a certain size, you start putting some money into the reserve instead. When the jp gets hit, the reserve becomes the new jackpot. This way you'll never have a monster $300k jp, but when your $200k one gets hit, you'll immediately have $100k to seed the new one.
