All,

Just saw this. Wow, lived up to the hype. Visually so amazing and well directed/acted that I bet even someone who spoke absolutely no Spanish would enjoy this even without subtitles. My Spanish is pretty horrible right now and I had to read subtitles most of the time, but I still barely even noticed doing it.

And while intense, it's actually not as gory as some of the posts/reviews had led me to believe. Just a handful of pretty graphic scenes.

Bump...I saw this tonight. Was a decent flick overall, I saw this and Children of Men and thought this movie was better. I wish that there was more scenes of her in the world.

a Q:

ALso, was it all in her mind?

all, i saw this movie last night. at first it starts out as a slightly more twisted harry potter movie. then came the violence and torture scenes. some of the things they showed were pretty gruesome. other torture scenes they didnt actually show anything. it was more psychological and then they would show the bloody after math.

after about the fourth torture scene i had a pit in my stomach, had enough and left the theatre w/ 20 minutes left to wait for my friends in the lobby. out in the lobby i found a small group of strangers who were doing the same. we spent the rest of the time talking.

absolutely no way any young child should see this. seven is about a decade away from being mature enough from handling some of these scenes.

This was AMAZING. Easily top 5 for last year, perhaps even the best movie with Departed.

think this might be a bit much for a even a old 7 year old
u might want to watch it first without her

Thanks for the warning. For a point of reference, is there some other film that it would compare to as far as how disturbing it is? She's seen Se7en, Requiem For a Dream, and the Saw movies. Those are the most disturbing that I can recall off the top of my head. She's seen all the older (80s) horror movies too, but those are pretty comical by today's standards.

Definitely do not take a 7 year old to this film, there is some horribly violent stuff, not at all something you want a young kid seeing.

It's really not cool to let 7 year olds watch that disturbing movies. No matter how cool the 7 year old thinks those movies are, or how cool the 7 year old thinks the adult is for letting her watch the movies.

Compared to those examples, Pan's Labyrinth is not that bad, but few movies are.

There's no way to explain it without sounding like I'm biased and think she's different (and far more mature) than other kids. Let's just leave it with the idea that I did NOT take her straight from Sesame Street and Jimmy Neutron to Hellraiser. That would indeed be really screwed up.

[/ QUOTE ]

sorry to contribute to the derailment, but its scary to me, not just in this case, but in general, how fast kids are growing up these days. kids need a childhood, they need to be naive/innocent. i wish i could explain why -- i dont think i particularly know why, but theres just something about a care-free, mindless, whimsical childhood that strikes me as important -- or maybe its just that the lack of one strikes as disturbing/sad.

"Cronos" and "The Devil's Backbone" are both amazing. Guillermo seems to suck at Hollywood movies but rock when he does his own thing. I'm definitely looking forward to Pan.

[/ QUOTE ]

I actually thought both of those films were flawed but worth seeing. There was something missing in both of them that made me not really care that much about the characters...beautifully made films, however.

I am looking forward to seeing Pan.
