Tax filing recommendations?
I've been playing semi-professionally for the past year. This would be my first year filing taxes as a pro, as this was my only source of income. Would anyone have a company they would recommend to help with the tax filing for the upcoming season?
Any recommendations are greatly appreciated! I ran a search for "taxes" and "filing" and didn't come up with anything useful over recent posts. |

Re: Tax filing recommendations?
I would recommend you don't pay taxes. But that is more from a self righteous point of view than a legal point of view. Paying taxes especially with the US ban is ridiculous to me but there are many who will disagree as was shown in a thread I made 2 yrs ago.

I would recommend you don't pay taxes. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, because us poker players don't have enough problems to deal with already. Let's throw tax evasion into the mix. What the hell.... |

Re: Tax filing recommendations?
OP, you should post in legislation. Bottom line is you should pay esp if poker is your main source of income. The recreational player that makes 1-2K per year can get away with not paying, the pro who makes 30K+ really can't.

Good book to buy: Tax Help for the Frugal Gambler. By Marrissa Chen and Jean Scott. Huntington Press. 800-244-2224. email cs@huntingtonpress.com.
I don't play professionally, but I hit a big bad beat jackpot in 2005, and needed help figuring out what to do, since the casino reported the income to the IRS. |

Re: Tax filing recommendations?
Find a local CPA. Call them up and ask them about your situation, and you should be able to tell right away if they have experience dealing with cases like yours. If he seems clueless, just call another one.
My CPA does a great job, even though I'm one of the first gamblers he's worked with. |
