First lap top purchase...recommendations needed

I am begining the process of purchasing a lap top. I have never owned one before. I anticipate using it primarily for internet, email, word processing, excel, and online poker (no more than 2 or 3 tabling). I would like to keep the price below $1000.00 Canadian, lower the better. What would you recommend for specs, brand etc?

Just helped my friend by one online. After much searching and deliberation we settled on a Dell. A great package, which we customized, came to $831 plus $66 in taxes. Included is a free upgrade to Windows Vista once it is released to the public. Only problem was the overpriced 256MB memory upgrade which we will hope to find cheaply somewhere else online. I disagree. After owning a Dell laptop, I'll never buy another one again. Getting anything fixed was a huge pain in the ass and over 3 years I had to deal with 4 problems. I have a fun email thread between me and Dell support that I'll post if I can find it.

I have a tablet, and I LOVE it for playing poker. Since I play limit, and often will play only 1 or 2 tables the tablet rules. It was also great for school since I could take notes right on the pdf/power point course notes if they existed, and I found taking normal notes also really easy. It was great for someone like me who is extremely disorganized and would constantly lose notes.
