I want to learn about MySQL, any suggestions?
So I want to make a small forum, just like this one but with different software (vBulletin). It says I need MySQL on my domain, I don't know anything about MySQL and I figured some of the helpful people in here might send me in the right direction. Thanks.

Re: I want to learn about MySQL, any suggestions?
MySQL Manual
There are some differences in later versions, but the basics will be the same. On another note...anyone else know what happened to MySQL.org? Is there no free open source version anymore? Perhaps I just didn't look hard enough but everything pointed to mysql.com which is all commercial/enterprise and support packages. Seems like just a couple years ago I had installed MySQL 5.0 on a couple boxes . |

Link on the left nav for 'Downloads' then select the 'mySQL Community Server' download link (left middle).

I would ask why you want to setup vBulletin if you are running a small forum. You may want to try http://www.punbb.org/ or some other free version before shelling out dollars.

Re: I want to learn about MySQL, any suggestions?
vBulletin was the first one I found that I liked, and all the free ones I had seemed to force me to host it on their server involving some kind of a gay hostname like www.lameboards9999.thenameIwant.com

Re: I want to learn about MySQL, any suggestions?
If you're just setting up a forum (I also like punbb over vbulletin) you really don't need to know a whole lot about MySQL. If you want to actually learn about databases and what not then you can download and install a free copy of MySQL server and the client on your machine to play with.

you need no knowledge of mysql to setup a forum.
i recommend phpbb instead of buying vbulletin for a small forum any web host should be able to host a bb |

Re: I want to learn about MySQL, any suggestions?
1. Complete documentation is available on the product's site: http://www.mysql.com/ . And it IS free.
2. To install any forum software, you will need to know some basics of MySQL - how to install it and do basic configuration. If you are OK with that, get it going. If you have no clue, get someone around to set it up for you (for free or very cheap). |
