Default Limit or NL?

Hey,

I just recently beat the 10NL level and was rolled at about $500, so I started playing 25NL and was doing quite well at first, but just had a horrible downswing. About 6 buyins...set over set, etc.

I have been thinking for a while about playing limit. I have heard that the limit is hard to beat, due to the rake. I am thinking something like .25/.50 or .50/$1 to start (obviously beating the smaller levels.....05/.10, etc....first). I am just looking for something where the downswings aren't as bad. I don't mind grinding it out.

Also, for someone just starting limit from NL, what would be some good posts to check out?

Thanks for all the help!
Alec

I think most people feel that NL has less variance.

NL tends to have less variance. If you are switching to limit to avoid downswings of the magnitude you experienced at NL you are in for a rude awakening.

Check out the FAQ, the digests' posts, and I believe there's a Micro-limit library somewhere on Wiki.

Approach limit as a very different game than NL...enjoy!

More variance at limit

And a shed-load more variance at the lowest levels of limit- where every donkey is calling with 3 outs. I know it's more profitable in the "long run"- but frustrating as 'ell in the "here-and-effin-now"

No. Its not more profitable, is it?
I read somewhere in the NL forum that you can expect to make 6-10BB/100 if you are a decent player. Unfortunately I suck at NL

Think Poker Plan was referring to donkeys calling with 3 outs to be more profitable in the long run.

OK, but you need a larger bankroll it terms of BB. Playing 25NL your average will be about $4/100/table (according to your 6-10BB/100) but you could achieve this rate playing 1/2FL, that has about the same bankroll requirements.

I chose FL mainly because I could build a bankroll much easier playing it than NL. Although - as more of you said before - FL has a larger variance.

Hmmm... I hate to ask abbreviation question all the time.
But what exactly means FL?

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear.

I meant to say:
Limit has higher vairiance than NL
Nano / micro limit has much more variance than higher levels of limit- but is more profitable (purely in terms of BB/100) than the higher levels of Limit

So if you're starting out at the lowest levels of Limit- you're in for bumpiest ride.

Hope that makes sense?

Ian
