Default Beat: Value of Trade In at Dealership, Brag: New Car

Beat: The dealership says my 04 Nissan Xterra is only worth 10.7K even though KBB says 13.1K

Brag: I'm picking up my '07 Dark Cherry Pearl Honda Ridgeline RTS tomorrow

Variance: My wife doesn't know.

Ship the new truck.

I used to sell cars and I assure this is SOP. They take the book and immediately subtract a couple thousand or more depending on the value of the car. There's an easy way around this though. Just say no thanks and walk out. They'll chase after you and offer another $500 for your car. Rinse, repeat.

take your trade in to CarMax first. Im buying a new truck on saturday and the dealership gave me a lowball price on my tradein. I took it to CarMax, had it appraised and they gave me an offer = to KBB price. I took said price to the dealership and they matched it without any hassle.

I sold cars during college, every deskman I knew would offer the customer two or three "deals" before they got down to the actual price of the car.

Best book to use is usually NADA guides. What is the wholesale NADA book for your rig? Only add/subtract for miles.

How much reconditioning?

It's a little bit of a pain, but selling your car to an individual rather than trading it in will probably get you the couple thousand you are missing there.

Remember that you have a right of recission for the deal in most states which will allow you to cancel the deal. If there is financing involved, you definitely have some time to cancel it if you think that you were screwed.

personally, I would never do this. You for sure can get full value for your car if you trade it. Just dont take the first offer. Or the second one. Or the third one. This process is FAR less painful than selling a car on your own.

This [censored] pisses me off. Obviously the salesman do it because it's +EV because people are weak/stupid/don't care but it's really annoying.

Next time I buy a car, I just want to say, "Listen, I know how this [censored] works, just give me the price you would offer if I was absolutely about to leave out the door, I'm busy and don't want to spend an hour pretending to negotiate a lower price with you."

However, whatever he gave me after that I still wouldn't believe :P
