The real scumminess, imo, was what happened between the people who "knew" each other and considered each other "Internet friends" or whatever. I think it's even scummier if these people have hung out at tournaments or wherever and shared rooms/drinks/meals/etc.

I think between Giga, BrandiRose, ZJ, Grimstarr, Kaz, JJProdify, this and various other tales recounted on 2+2 and NWP and other sites, it's pretty obvious that far too many people put far too much trust in people they don't really know at all far too quickly. And when it comes to $$$, a lot of people have very flexible moral codes.

It's also pretty clear by some of those stories as well as all the stories of people being scammed in money transfers and stuff, that 2+2ers are among the easiest group of people anywhere to scam. Taking into how much money exists around here, the only place better than this for a scammer is a rich people w/ Alzheimer's retirement home.
