There is no way people are close to as fast as this thread thinks.

I'll wager that people really did run as fast as they're talking at one point in their lives. Just not now. [/ QUOTE ] I agree with this, I've had a great time reading this thread. 13 sec was my guess off the bat regarding the OP's original question. Anything under that, and I think you start reaching a point where times are just unachievable for some people. I was an 800 runner in HS. I wasn't very fast, and probably could have run the 100 in about 12.2 or 12.1 maybe. But even if I had trained solely for the 100, I doubt I ever could have run faster than 11.8 - I don't think I'm wired to go that fast, even with good technique. Also, another huge LOL at some of the 800 comments in this thread. 1:55 would be a state champ in most states, most years. I know that was the case in Washington when I was in high school. |

LOL at almost every single response in this thread, mostly because they're evidence of the famous dictum "Opinions are like [censored]. Everyone has one." Facts are out there people, go look them up.
1. A 6 min mile is VERY slow by competitive standards. The 9 year old girl record for 1500m is 5:31 (Saana Luoma from Finland), which is about a 5:53 min mile. There is no established 9 year old girl record for the 100m, but extrapolating from the 11 to 14 year old records, it's definitely above 14s, possibly even 15s (error bars get large). 2. Speed ratios from 100m to 1500m remain fairly constant across gender and age (v1500/v100 ~ 0.7), so taking 9 year old girl world records is a valid point of comparison. This means OP should shoot for mid 14s 100m times if he wants a 6mm equivalent. For a healthy adult male, this should be fairly easy. What does this mean? That a 6 min mile is not a very lofty standard at all. 3. Sub 1:55 800m in HS will (all other things being equal) usually get you at least a partial ride to a decent D1 school. It is very fast. As a point of comparison, only one high schooler broke 1:50 last year. |

this surprises me. do you have a source? [/ QUOTE ] I think he means that the ratio of 1500m record:100m record remains relatively constant for the overall fields for different age/gender groupings. Not that there is a single constant ratio of an individual's performance at 1500m and 100m that can be applied to most people. |

i was the fastest guy on my track team in HS, but there weren't any black guys on the team, i think i ran somewhere between 11.5-12.0, not sure, i didn't take track very seriously. i do know then when i went to conference meets i came in last almost every time, but was competing against black kids from newark mostly.

[/ QUOTE ] It's indeed surprising how close these ratios stay. They do break down when you start to lose good sample size (i.e. very young, very old, or rarely run events like the 150m, 1000m, 3mi, etc). A good source: http://freenet-homepage.de/athletics/ BTW, the record I quoted was a Euro Junior Record, not World. Hopefully this isn't too much of a hijack. |
