I really don't agree (with the quoted part only). We don't know any of the story or how close those two were.

I know if I ever asked a friend not to date my ex, it would have nothing to do with [censored] blocking. It would have everything to do with what could have been a painful breakup that I don't want to have to relive every time I see my best friend and her together.

In the end, after all the times my best friend has had my back, and bailed me out of tough situations, I'm not gonna put our friendship on the line over some pussy. It's not like it's a rare commodity.

Rook to be clear I was not interested in dating this girl. Im moving to a different state in two weeks so I was basically just trying to hook up with her that night/maybe a short fling before I left. He also was very clear that it would not end our friendship if I went ahead and hooked up with this chick just that he didnt want me to. Also they dated for senior year of highschool and broke up when me and him left for college. He was upset about the breakup but did get a new girlfriend less then a month after we got there.

tbh, it sounds like you already made up your mind. I wouldn't do it out of respect for my friends wishes. Personally I think that if you felt it important enough to ask your friend if he was cool with it, maybe it's important enough to listen to what he says.

Whatever the case, not all friendships are the same, and not everyone reacts the same. His "I'd rather you not" answer could be simply that, He'd rather you not, but doesn't particularly care if you did. You know him, we don't. Go with your read on this.
