Default re-buy satellites - start with double?

i like re-buys, partly because knowing when and when not to re-buy/add-on is another opportunity to get an edge over the donkeys. Many of these situations are judgement calls, but i think that the decision of whether to double up before the first hand (if available) can be reduced to a maths question with a right answer.

Consider a $1000 tourney with 2 re-buy satellites -

$500 - with 1 seat offered for every 2 buy-ins (ratio 2:1). clearly re-buying before the first hand here is nonsense - you could have just bought in to the main event

$1 - with 1 seat for every 1000 entries (ratio 1000:1). If you start this tourney with 1500 chips, then the average on the bubble is gonna be 1,500,000. You've gotta accumulate chips so i think we agree that the automatic re-buy is a good idea - and several people would advocate a manic strategy.

What ratio makes the instant re-buy a good idea?

In particular - what about the $10+1 re-buy sats to the pokerstars $1m (ratio aboout 21:1). I start with 3000, but i'm often the only one at my table doing this - am i wrong here?

Theoretically there is a point where the buy in would be such that a rebuy would not make sense.

In actuality those tournaments (ie $500 buy in for a $1k seat) do not exist and therefore a rebuy+add on is always correct.

This question was posed in a thread last week and the vote was 48/3 in favor of a rebuy+add on. The 3 people were wrong.

Add on in satellites?

I agree, the instant rebuy is a must. What about the 39+R to the sunday 215, ive looked at them, and it appears that at the start only about 1/4 of the players make the instant rebuy. Any thoughts on the getting the most ev out of these?

$10r turbos to SM = always take initial rebuy and always addon

I think the really interesting question would be to consider the $36r turbos to the SM

I generally don't double rebuy immediately in the $36R sats (the ones to $200 tournament, anyway). Sometimes I will later on if there are bad players to my right with deepish stacks and I am still below 1500.
