How many Gigabytes in the human brain?
Hi all, just yet another debate between me and my friends on how many gigabytes there are in a human brain.
I am thinkin more like 20 gigs, but some actually suggested 100+ Any ideas, opinions, suggestions, or jokes would be appreciated. |

It's gotta be way, way more than that. Think about all the memories you can recall with picture-perfect clarity, songs you can memorize, skills you've learned, etc, etc.

Re: How many Gigabytes in the human brain?
Brain has 100 million neurons. It depends on whether you want to view each neuron as simply on/off or whether you think it encodes more. Some brain cells do this weird crap where if they are "on", they will send out electrical pulses at 5 Hertz, and if they are "off" it will go down to 1 Hertz. Weird [censored]. Anywho, you'd need to divide by 8 to get number of bytes.
Bus speed is also slow in the brain. Only a few miles an hour. I was in a class where we did this cool experiment where we all held hands, waited for the person to our left to squeeze our left hand, and then squeezed the hand of the person to our right. It took forever for the signal to get around the class. But the brain gets its power through parallel computing and a really nice network setup. One neuron, even though it's just a bit, stores multiple things, so there is mad compression going on. |

According to a few sources I've read the brain has 100 billion neurons (not million). [/ QUOTE ] Heh, yeah typo sry. I also don't vouch for the exact speed of nerves, my neuroscience classes were years and years ago. It's kind of an apples to oranges question. When the brain stores an image, it's hard to assign a number of bytes to it. |

100+ gigs?
lol. You guys are retarded. I'll go with an exabyte, but a brontobyte might not be all that unrealisitc. PS. I think this is immeasurable. |
