Have a big party celebrating your quitting smoking. If you start smoking again after doing this, it will make you look like an idiot.

Tenn, good luck! Quitting is extremely tough.

There's something I can definitely recommend though. There is a shot you can get that shuts down the receptors in your brain that crave nicotine.

Before I go into this, I'll say that I still smoke, and have taken the shot twice. I'm a huge smoker, I smoke between 2 and 3 packs a day. The first time I took the shot I quit for 5 days. Unfortunately I'm also a drinker and went out and drank with my friends which put me right back on them. I did the same thing the second time I got the shot, I just wasn't ready to quit.

The shot however does work, it totally takes away any physical craving for nicotine, and you're left with just psychological addictions. The shot cost me $375 IIRC, and you get a free second shot if the first one doesn't work.

It's kind of expensive, but nothing compared to the cost of smoking. If I quit drinking anytime soon, I'm going to immediately do the shot again, and hopefully quit smoking forever.

Here's the link if you're interested.

my mom was a smoker for over 25 years, and she started taking some pill a few months ago and hasn't smoked since. i know that it's covered by some insurance companies, but i can't remember the name. unfortunately my mom's insurance doesn't cover it, but she was spending so much on cigarettes that it balanced out

Awesome. I just want to thank everyone for the encouragement, the stories of themselves quitting and the suggestions on what I can do to help. I may keep this thread alive to vent throughout my quitting process and let you all know what I've tried and how it worked. Hopefully we can have a 1yr thread reunion next year and I'll still be smoke free.

Here's to hoping! Keep up the suggestions and stories. I think anyone quitting or who has quit but is maybe faltering might get some help from the good words.

I'm quitting for the second time starting this new year.
My roommates are joining me.
Day 1 = success.
We'll see how the rest of the week goes.

My roommates are smoking as we speak.

If this helps, Tennenbaum, finding out you smoke is like finding my favorite teacher from grade five smokes like a steam engine and drinks. Sort of a weird realization.

I'm seriously shocked.

Anyhow, if it's worth anything, my grandma (who smoked for 60+ years) quit when she was 82 and my mom quit after 25 years a few years ago. They both used Zyban, and it was a hefty battle for the both of them, but a seriously good one. Good luck!

I just started crying for about 2 and a half minutes for no reason. And then totally stopped. Ha ha ha. so lame.
