Default Local player made a move--would you have played different than me?

Riverside Casino, Laughlin Nevada--2-6 Spread-Limit, full table—12/27 @ lunchtime

Interesting move put on me by a local player—would you have played different than me?

The move was a pre-flop bluff limp-reraise. The villain, who I thought to be the best player a the table, limped for $2 from MP, and was called by the cutoff and button…I in the blind, raking in chips from the previous hand, but stopped to look at my cards when the dealer asked me if i was checking...i saw JJ’s, so I said “no, I am raising” and raised $4 more. The villian reraised $6—up to this point the game had had no form of limp/reraise or check/raising…I heard a small murmur from other players and I laughed a ‘ho ho ho!!”... the other two limpers folded to his raise. I called saying with a smile “well I just took it off you, so I might as well give it back”.

The flop came 4c, Qs, Kd, missing me with two overcards to my pair. i paused a few seconds, then checked the flop, and he bet $6...I smiled, paused a few seconds and then shook my head folding...he asked “aren’t you going to give me any play?”. Again I smiled my shirt-eating smile and shook my head. As the dealer was collecting the pot for him, the villain said “I guess I win this with my pair of tens" and then flashed only the ten of hearts. I smiled, nodded to the villain, then said “after that, I could use a drink” and called over the cocktail waitress---that got a laugh from the table.

Now fellow 2plus2'ers...Do you think the villian had only tens? Would you have played on?

Some background…Laughlin NV/Bullhead City AZ is a retirement town on the Colorado River with 7-8 low-roller casinos—pretty good video poker is the lure for the locals, cheap rooms and various promotions bring in tourists, like me and my wife...

I thought this was a typical small town low limit locals game with its crew of regular retirees having fun beating other retirees and drop-in tourists. There were three guys well over 60 there that knew each other, two that were winning and had stacks well over $100, and the other older guy that always had only a short stack yet seemed to be holding his own--if he busted out he re-bought for the minimum. One other good player was a guy who looked 21-25 and he had $150+ in front of him and seemed to be a winner. It was spread limit $2-$6 game with only one player putting up a blind and that for $2. This game was about the highest limit game in that town, and what I've found in most locals casinos in Nevada--good training grounds and a place for some cheap fun....The other 5 seats had players coming and going during my 2 and a half hours at the table, with about 7-8 bust outs. The game was neither tight nor loose, but it rarely had any 3 bet rounds and never a cap bet—usually 4 – 6 players to a flop, and almost never more than 2 players to a showdown. The others played around 25-35% VPIP preflop...

I loosened up a little from my own standards to call with Ax suited and +K7suited, and played around 20%-25% VPIP preflop game…I am sure the regulars thought I was tight...i had won three or four pots at showdown with flush draws and lost only one with cracked QQ’s when the hand took place…I had about $190 in front of me and I was ahead about $60 having just taken the biggest pot won by anyone—over $100 versus the villain of the story, perhaps he was steaming a bit still when the hand happened...the villain seemed to be able to read the other players well, and little bluffing seemed to be going on...i must have looked like a juicy target to those barracudas...i left about 30 minutes after this hand and finished up +$45 for time at the table

I stopped reading about halfway through.

Anyhow, so villian says he has a good hand. You have a good hand. Bad flop for you. Villian bets. You fold.

Seems rather standard.

As told, I would be more surprised if he had TT than AT. You have to pick and choose your battles. If you have found a good game, you don't need to pay off 5 small bets (or more given the spread limit game) on this board - keep in mind that you are only like 65% against AT and AJ. And you are 9% against myriad holdings.

thanks, it was a little long i agree, but i thought i'd try to answer all the questions likely to be asked if anyone was interested...it was an eye-opener for that kind of move to be made in a low limit game like that...but one i will tuck away in my arsenal

Not that it matters, but why did you raise 4, when you could have raised 6, in a multiway limped pot?
