BTW, Balvenie Scotch 12 Year Double Wood $33 - is imo the best scotch value around.

Was at the store last night and I found this, but it was $60 , is it possible I was mistaking it for a different Balvenie? I don't think it said double wood but it had a pic of 2 wood barrels on the front and it was a 12 year old.

Scotch, and wine can vary in price from store to store moreso than anything else in a the liquor store. Prices also vary state to due to taxes. You can't compare an online wearhouse price to a small local store.

purple,

"You can't compare an online wearhouse price to a small local store."

Of course you can, I just did it.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Yeah, in general, you are absolutely right. Definitely from state to state (as discussions on this forum have said) due to taxes and distributors, but also as you say can vary hugely between local stores too.

All,

Am I too much of a noob to say that I'm enjoying a nice Chivas 12 right now? I saw it on the original list, but didn't see any comments about it. Thoughts on the Chivas? Thanks!

bowens,

I think Chivas pretty much sucks, but hell, it's whiskey, enjoy! I've had and enjoyed more than my share of much worse stuff than Chivas.

In the same price range, I way prefer Johnnie Walker Black Label.

Plenty of great new stuff for you to try in this thread at a very wide range of styles and prices.

El D,

Thanks for the thoughts. I've never had the Black Label. I will certainly give it a try. Thanks!

Two suggestions if you like Islay:

Ardbeg Uigeadail and Ardbeg Still Young. Both are Cask Strength.

Bushmill's Linky - BevMo

What is the difference between the 4th and 5th items on the list? The 4th item is 1.75L/$36 and the 5th item is .75L/$18, which is fairly normal for the same product, but the hues and the labels look different and there's a large disparity in the ratings.

Also, I'm thinking of hosting a little whiskey tasting get together. Can anyone recommend some foods that both go well with whiskey and are good for cleansing the palate?

Lars: Thanks for the recs. I like Ardbeg and I like cask strength, but I haven't had those. I'll keep an eye out for them.

LOTD: Hmmm, sure seems like they are both regular bushmill's. I think maybe the color of the bigger bottle is just f'ed up. In any case, the lighter one is what regular bushmill's looks like for real. Also, no idea wtf with the ratings. Maybe the big bottle is some obscure variation, but all the different varieties I'm aware of have completely different names and labels.

At tastings I do with friends we usually just have stuff like crackers / cheese / fruit / etc., random finger food and then maybe get some pizza once we get drunk. Everything goes w/ whiskey, though! This link says to avoid cheese, whatever : http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1849928
