Spanish for practical reasons and because its a great springboard into Portuguese and Italian. German because its not too difficult and so you can watch all the cool WWII movies/docs and not need the subtitles. Also, with those two, you should be able to get around anywhere in Europe - even Eastern Europe, like Czech/Hungary/Poland - with no problems.

If you're really interested in Arabic and like playing in sandboxes, the US military is always desperate for Arabic speakers and you can probably get your training paid for assuming you don't mind going over for a couple tours or whatever.

Bison,

I think a good factor should be which language has the best literature to read when you become fluent. Russian lit is awesome, hence I choose Russian. French lit is pretty good too, my second choice.

So you are fluent in Russian and French? Otherwise, how do you know you like the literature? If from translations, is it THAT bad not to know the original that you're willing to devote some serious studying time to it?

my wife has been taking spanish lessons for 6 months and it is pretty amazing the progress she has made. she's taking weekly lessons and having discussions w/ppl in spanish whenever she can.

I think if you are serious you should definitely sign up for a class that has weekly or biweekly lessons.

Go for Mandarin.

Spanish is too easy to pick up and isn't really worth much unless you have a big yard.

Speaking mandarin can be valuable for everything from shopping in Chinatown to impressing (and gaining respect) from business associates, especially in the Bay Area.

take spanish. spanish is in some ways close to english, a ton of words are so similar to english but ta the same time harder to learn than mos tpeople woul dhave you believe. a lot of people agree english is a pretty easy language, then german (english and german are related) and then comes spanish which is harder. everyone speaks it, and then after spanish you can jump off to other languages which are very related, italian, portugues, french

Spanish is the easy choice, WTF at any other choices.

And let me be the first to say that the OP was damned hilarious.
