Default Is 5K Enough?

I was looking for some bankroll advice. I will spare every one the details of my playing abilities, however, after playing for about three years I think I am ready to take a "shot" at a 1/3 NL game with a max buy in of $300.

Assuming I am an "average" player do you think $5,000 is a large enough bankroll to test my abilities. I have read several places that risking only 5% of your bankroll on any given session should allow for a player to play "freely" or to not be playing on scared money. Is this accurate? If you do not think so what would you consider an apporiate bankroll for this game?

Yes, I have tested my abilities at lower limits both on-line and in casinos. This limit is, in my humble opinion, not beyond by ability. The main thing I am concerned about is the dreaded "cold deck" and I was wondering if 5K, at this limit, is enough to give my ability a "fair shot?"

if you feel comfortable playing that level go for it. i think that 5% rule is stupid. if the game is good, your playing good, and can afford it, you might as well sit. if it doesnt workout, you can always move back down. i have no problem taking shots at higher limits for a buy in or 2. you learn alot and it just helps you get used to the bigger ammounts of money your playing with.

You do realize don't you that there is really no extra bankroll requirement for multitabling. Assuming you can play multiple tables well you don't need any extra amount over your standard bankroll to play more tables. Variance is going to happen regarless over a certain number of hands...all playing more tables does it get you to that number quicker.

17 buy ins is barely enough for an excellent player. 20 buy-in swings are not uncommon for the best of players.

Try 12 tabling with a standard 20-25 buyin roll. You'll quickly find your entire roll in play.

This IS live we're talking about here, right? If so, 5k is probably fine.

I don't think a good player playing live 1/3 NL is going to have a 20 buyin downswing, assuming good tilt control. Most live msnl games have much less variance than online msnl games today. The games are just so much more aggressive online.

Lets be realistic, most people aren't 12 tabling. But the point was as a variance issue, not adding infinite tables until your whole roll is in play. Playing up to 8 tables is fine on a 25-30 BI bankroll
